After flower is compiled and installed as an FCGI handler, and it is given an initially empty directory in which to create a database, requests to the new service return an error message, reporting that the databse contains no home page:

Although the database is empty, by a polite fiction it does contain one document: the read-only blank document. The blank document contains an empty XML payload and just a little bit of metadata. We can view it by clicking the "blank page" icon on the far right of the toolbar:

As a next step to building a home page, we can make a copy of the blank page.
